Lake Manyara is the perfect starting point for an unforgettable East Africa safari, nestled at the foot of the Great Rift Valley escarpment. While its wildlife sightings may not rival those of Tarangire, the Ngorongoro, and the Serengeti, the park’s unique features make it a worthwhile stop. From its tree-climbing lions to its vibrant flamingos and diverse birdlife, Manyara offers a distinct wildlife experience. It’s a popular stop on the route from Arusha to the Ngorongoro Crater, providing ample opportunities to spot elephants and baboons. Some travelers choose a quick game drive, but it’s important to note that the wildlife experience here is different from that of Ngorongoro and Serengeti.
The main thing to see in the park is the famous lions that like to climb trees. People are still determining why they do this, but watching a group of lions hanging out in a tree is incredible. There are also many elephants, baboons, and other animals like wildebeests, buffaloes, zebras, hippos, and flamingos. If you like watching birds, you can also see many different kinds of birds, especially birds of prey.
The number of flamingos on Lake Manyara can vary significantly, as these birds frequently migrate between this and other East African lakes. The sight of flamingos can range from a solitary bird to a flock of thousands, making it a matter of chance rather than certainty. If you’re particularly keen on seeing these elegant birds, it’s best to plan your visit during the peak migration season.
According to the regional migration pattern, the peak season for Manyara falls between July and October. Nevertheless, given the park’s size, such seasonal variations should not be the sole decisive factor. Lake Manyara consistently offers enjoyable soft game viewing experiences throughout the year. It serves as an excellent starting point for a Tanzania safari, and we advise incorporating it into your Northern Tanzania circuit while en route to the Ngorongoro Crater.
Visitors can enjoy daytime game drives in the park and now also have the option to go on night safaris. Additionally, short walks are available at the camps deep inside the park. Staying in the Rift Valley outside the park offers even more activities, such as walking, village trips, hiking, and mountain biking, which are available at some lodges.
